Transposition of the Services Directive: Fewer barriers and more opportunities

On 28 December 2006, EC Directive 2006/123 of the European Parliament and of the Council regarding services in the internal market came into force (Services Directive). Member States have a transposition deadline of three years, which ends on 28 December 2009.

The objective of the Directive is to reach an authentic single market of services in the European Union through the elimination of the legal and administrative barriers that currently limit the development of service activities between Member States.

The process of transposing the Services Directive is presented for Spain as an opportunity to reduce unjustified or disproportionate impediments to accessing and exercising activity in certain sectors, thereby contributing to an ambitious program of administrative simplification and increased transparency. Therefore, there will be improvement in the regulatory framework, resulting in gains in efficiency, productivity and employment in the sectors involved, in addition to an increase in the variety and quality of the available services for companies and citizens.
